Unidentified youth in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region have severely beaten the Municipal Police Commander, DSP Nana Boakye Yiadom, and freed eight inmates from police custody.
The group also vandalized the police station, causing significant damage to property.
According to an anonymous source within the Wenchi police, the incident took place on Tuesday morning after DSP Yiadom visited the Tohaba area, a suburb of Wenchi, to arrest a suspect. However, upon finding the suspect absent, the commander reportedly detained the suspect’s pregnant wife and brought her to the police station.
Furious about the arrest, the youth gathered at the police station to demand the release of the woman. During the ensuing confrontation, they vandalized DSP Yiadom’s vehicle and the charge office. Items such as a flat-screen TV, a fridge, computer equipment, and sliding doors were destroyed.
In the chaos, the youth also broke into the cells and freed eight inmates.
DSP Yiadom is currently receiving medical treatment at the Bono Regional Teaching Hospital for the injuries sustained during the attack.
