Marcus Rashford seems to be a constant target for criticism, and it’s been that way for a long time. But why is that?
Currently, Rashford is in the spotlight due to Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, leaving him out of the squad for Sunday’s derby. Rashford also made headlines with comments about being ready for “the next steps” in his career.
But when you take a step back and consider his career as a whole, it feels like Rashford has always been judged more harshly than most players, especially when it comes to his form on the field.
Part of the reason for this is simply who Rashford is. He’s a Manchester United academy graduate, one of the club’s top earners, and someone with a lot of expectation placed on him. Because of this, people expect more from him, and when his performance drops, it draws more scrutiny than it might for other players. There’s always talk about how good he was in the past, and fans wonder why he isn’t reaching those same levels now.
While it’s common for players to go through dips in form, Rashford seems to attract a level of resentment that others don’t face in similar situations.
But what really adds to the unfair criticism of Rashford is the way his off-field actions are intertwined with discussions of his on-field performance.
His charitable work and activism are often brought up in the conversation about his football career, and unfortunately, this adds an extra layer of judgment. In my view, this treatment is unjust. People seem to have already formed opinions about his character, but the reality is, how many of them truly know him?
