The legal team representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—has sharply criticised what they describe as an excessive and intimidating security operation at his Kumasi home.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, May 23, 2025, Kwame Adom-Appiah, who is also the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, denounced the joint operation by the National Security and Police Service as “immature and unnecessary.”

According to Adom-Appiah, deploying nearly 20 security vehicles to apprehend Wontumi was a gross overreach and an inefficient use of state resources.

“Chairman Wontumi is not a national security threat, nor is he planning a coup. This level of force is completely unjustified,” he said. “A simple, formal invitation would have sufficed.”

The dramatic show of force unsettled residents in the area, many of whom watched anxiously as armed personnel surrounded the property. The specific reasons for the raid remain unclear, and it is yet to be confirmed whether Chairman Wontumi was inside the premises at the time.

Adom-Appiah called for more professionalism in such matters, urging the security services to adopt more lawful and measured procedures, especially when dealing with public figures.

The incident has sparked public debate about the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties, with critics calling for greater transparency and accountability in security operations.
