Three people, including a schoolgirl, were killed in a fresh gun battle in Bawku on Friday, November 29, 2024, bringing the total number of deaths in the conflict to 32.
The deadly exchange of fire intensified in the Gingande-Zongo area, where multiple houses were also reported to have been set on fire. The violence began around midnight and continued well into the afternoon, with the gunfire ceasing only around 1 PM.
In addition to the fatalities, several others have sustained gunshot wounds, some of which are life-threatening.
This latest round of violence follows the death of another individual just two days prior, highlighting the worsening situation in the region. The conflict, which erupted in late October 2024, has shown no signs of abating, with hostilities often flaring up during curfew hours and attacks on travelers further escalating the tension.
The return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile is believed to have contributed to the recent flare-up in violence, according to some sources.
Bawku, already destabilized by ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, is now facing further unrest due to these ongoing attacks. Local authorities are struggling to restore peace and order, but the situation remains tense and unpredictable.
