Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has announced that beginning December 1, 2024, kidney dialysis will be provided at no cost to all patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This decision follows a successful pilot program that offered free dialysis for individuals aged 60 and older, as well as those under 18.

Dr. Bawumia made this announcement during a campaign event in the Old Tafo constituency on Sunday, November 10.

He highlighted the financial burden of kidney disease and the importance of making treatment accessible. “Many people struggle with kidney diseases that require dialysis, often facing significant costs.

Six months ago, we launched a pilot program to include dialysis in the NHIS. For the past six months, free dialysis has been available to those over 60 and under 18,” he said.

“Now, we are concluding this pilot program, and I’m pleased to announce that starting December 1, all kidney dialysis patients will receive free treatment under the NHIS,” he added.
