The Black Stars of Ghana have dropped to 77th place in the latest FIFA rankings, a four-place decline following their underwhelming performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign.
Previously ranked 73rd in October, Ghana now finds itself in 14th place in Africa, trailing top teams like Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt. The decline in the rankings comes after a dismal qualification run, where Ghana only earned three points from six matches.
Their campaign ended with a 1-1 draw against Angola and a surprising 2-1 home loss to Niger, leaving the Black Stars at the bottom of Group F and out of contention for AFCON 2025. This marks a significant setback for one of Africa’s most storied football nations.
Meanwhile, Niger, who finished above Ghana in the group, saw a positive rise in the rankings, climbing nine spots to 122nd globally, further emphasizing Ghana’s struggles.
In February 2024, Ghana reached its highest FIFA ranking of the year at 67th but has since experienced a downward trend. Their current position of 77th places them ahead of teams like Zambia and Gabon but behind others such as Cape Verde and Burkina Faso in Africa.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers set to begin in March, Ghana’s focus will now shift to rebuilding its team and bouncing back from this setback to reclaim their place among Africa’s elite.
Meanwhile, in the global rankings, Argentina continues to lead, followed by France, Spain, and England in third and fourth, with Brazil in fifth. There have been no changes in the top ten since July.
For the Black Stars, the immediate challenge will be addressing the issues exposed during the AFCON qualifiers and setting their sights on a strong showing in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
